Island Life is the life for me - Aklan, Philippines.

Chalk it up to genetics, but there’s something undeniably fitting about being surrounded by nature and relatively disconnected from the internet.

Though my work relies heavily on the digital world (I pretty much work remote and do a myriad of things online), and I’m deeply fascinated by technology, spending time in a place where things move at a much slower pace and people are more focused on what’s right in front of them versus what’s online is quite comforting.

Granted, I’m sure the majority of people who read this in the West also feel the same way (or perhaps the grass is always greener on the other side), but the lesson here is that we should all try to make more of an effort to unplug and focus solely on what’s right in front of us. Though, I suppose this kind of practice is more conducive when the weather is nice and nature-bound activities are plentiful all around you.

Seen here: miscellaneous shots taken from around Aklan; spanning the city of Kalibo, Ochando and my Uncle Axel’s farm.

Fun Fact: Kalibo has actually come a long way since I last visited. The introduction of traffic lights and fibre-optic internet cables have created a more amicable balance between nature and technology. Sadly, as what happens with any advancement towards modernity, people don’t carry around bolos anymore—much to my disappointment—but I guess that is what you get when you pursue civility.
